Ours is Better

Have a look at this new downtown stadium in Charleston, West Virginia.

Even if you were for renovating War Memorial Stadium, as I was (and I still believe that it could have been very successful), you have to admit that Greensboro's First Horizon Park (photos by TheShu), designed by local architect Kenneth Mayer, is way better than that one in West Virginia.

Update 4.9.05: JA from West Virginia emailed me: "As a native West Virginian, I was disappointed to see your 'ours is better than theirs' posting on your blog regarding ball parks. Please leave the "naah, naah, naah, naah, naah, naah" postings to other, less erudite bloggers. Stick to your reflective, educational, positive, upbeat format!"

That's the nicest scolding I've ever received, and I'll try to avoid invidious comparisions from now on.

Yes, but that guy in the link looks manlier than you. I'm talking Stone Phillips manlier. So, ultimately, I have to give him more credibility beause that's the way I roll.

"that's the way I roll."

I thought you are married.

I roll. Are you claiming to roll, Roch? I've seen you. That's not rolling. Don't get up in my grille and claim to roll. That's limping.

David: C'mon, man. Use it.

Greensboro's stadium may be better, but Charleston's downtown is a lot cooler. Of course, whenever there's a river running through downtown you have an advantage.

I used to visit Charleston quite regularly. It's a beautiful city. Shame that whenever someone says "Charleston" the first thing they think of is usually SC.

OK, Helios: nyah, nyah, nyah.

As a native West Virginian, I can claim two things about the stadium in Charleston:

1) It's better than what was there when I was a kid.

2) "Pretty" doesn't always seem to be first priority in Charleston, but I bet there are a lot of people there partying their butts off. The state high school basketball tournament, the Kanawha River Regatta, and most country music concerts turn downtown Charleston into a party place. Some of my happiest teenager memories happened in downtown Charleston (including my first kiss on the capitol steps).

By the way, they have their Civic Center downtown, right across the street from their downtown mall and around the corner from some pretty high scale hotels. The "footprint" for Charleston's downtown is pretty large, but restaurants and bars in that part of town are always packed.
