I've heard slumlords make similar arguments -- "if I fix my units up, these poor people won't be able to afford them."<BR/><BR/>I would say two things to your friend. First, property values are partly determined by the law of supply and demand. If smart-growth neighborhoods show spikes in property values (and my limited experience indicates that they do), it's an indication that the demand for smart growth neighborhoods is far exceeding the supply. The remedy? Increase the supply.
